Fenland Windows & Conservatories Ltd Tips.

Choosing a conservatory is a serious investment but will add significant value to your home. Conservatories come in a wide range of styles and shapes to complement your home, remember to choose one that fits in with your architecture and not to get carried away as the style can decrease the value of your property.

What do you want to use your conservatory for?

- here are just a few ideas to think about...

Playroom, dining room, all year round sitting room, extension to the garden, an office/study area.

What do you want it to look like?

Think about the design and Fenland will ensure you received detailed designs with the quotation listing all the specifications.

Materials

The materials that are used in your conservatory will determine the lifespan, practicality and usage. Most frames tend to be PVCu for lasting performance and glazing can be polycarbonate or other translucent sheeting, clear or performance glass. Materials you choose should be easy to clean and maintain. You may want infill panels. Doors - single or double sliding patio doors, french doors. You may also want to consider period features to match your architecture such as coloured leaded lights.

If you prefer to have a dwarf brick wall rather than glazing to the floor Fenland will ensure they match to the existing brickwork.

How much do you want to spend?

This will depend on your budget and lifestyle.

Where should you site your conservatory?

If you have a choice it is better to site your conservatory onto a well used room like a kitchen or living room. Always bear in mind the aspect of your planned conservatory. If you site one that faces South it will receive more sun than one facing North so you will need to think about ventilation and blinds.

What size should it be?

Make sure your planned conservatory complements your home and has enough floor space to meet your needs. It is a good idea to stake it out first using string. It is generally inadvisable to site your doors on the front of the conservatory as this can create a corridor effect allowing less flexibility on how you place your furniture.

What glazing should I have?

You need to think carefully about the type of glazing you want. Normal glass and polycarbonates will allow heat to penetrate making your conservatory hot during the Summer months so you may need to think about a performance glass bearing in mind this is a more expensive option.

Ventilation

Adequate ventilation is very important to avoid a build up of condensation You need to think about how many opening windows you may need, opting for a roof vent, installing air conditioning or ceiling fans.

Heating

Remember any fixed heating needs to have separate temperature and on/off controls. You may also want to consider underfloor heating.
